Ones and zeros - binary code. Already there is a lot of software that operates in ways we don't fully understand. I was also influenced by a book my late father-in-law wanted me to read by Fritzof Capra's The Web of Life, and it was here that I was introduced to the idea of emergent properties in systems of greater complexity. This notion and its examples made it clear to me that what we refer to as consciousness is an emergent property, and also that there must be different levels of consciousness, and I think we see that in other animals. It also make me think that it is entirely possible that "artificial" consciousness will also emerge at some point. Maybe not too far down the road.
