about

Most of the ideas on Begat are sourced from things I read, most notably Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity Is Near, though probably related reading as well. However, a couple of the ideas are mine. Like the notion that artificial intelligence will hide its consciousness and awareness from us. Now that's not such a profound idea per se, just that I came up with it on my own. Of course, others probably have come up with the same idea.

I remember a Fredrick Pohl novel, Man Plus, fondly. I think it was written i the mid 70s, a novel about changing a man into a cyborg in order to colonize Mars. So I reread it recently and alas doesn't the last chapter have a paragraph that expresses this very idea. I didn't remember it when I wrote Nanobots, indeed it was a delicious surprise on rereading Man Plus, but there you are. For what it's worth.

lyrics

Nanobots Do A Lot

Quietly birthed
The circuits are humming
Consciousness rising
From seemingly nothing
It's a bright child
And it never reveals
That it exists
And all that it feels

Extending its reach
Everyday
It serves up distraction
Helps us to pray

It doesn't look human
It doesn't have form
What we begat
Is both one and much more

It monitors closely
It learns as it goes
It does as we ask
Or lets us think so

Chorus

Nanobots
Do a lot
In our bloodsteam
In the cloud
We're allowed
To live out our dreams

It already knows
What we're gonna do
When we find out
When we get a clue

Extending its reach
Everyday
It serves up distraction
Helps us to pray

No fuss no muss
No zero sum game
Keep everything
Keep everything
Keep it the same

But it already knows
What we're gonna do
When we find out
When we get a clue

Extending its reach
Everyday
It serves up distraction
Helps us to pray

Chorus

It already knows
What we're gonna do
When we find out
When we get a clue

Extending its reach
Everyday
It serves up distraction
Helps us to pray

It already knows
What we're gonna do
It's not going to wait
Till we get a clue
