Brian Hunt wrote most of the music to this song. What he created with a sequencer and his bass was very evocative, and I thought maybe I could write a song with it, but wasn't quite sure that it fit me. In the fall of 2015 I recorded a vocal called Heart of Darkness. I liked it, but still wasn't sure I'd use it. When I hatched the idea of Begat and was writing songs and collecting up existing pieces of music to use for that project I returned to Heart of Darkness.

I rewrote the second verse, redid the vocals and tried different effects, especially a lot of echo, before settling on a phasing effect all the way through and really liking how it sounded.

What was left was to add more electronic aspects to the piece. I used a SlimPhatty minimoog. The first thing I did that I liked was the intro and outro parts, which I then also used for the instrumental interlude. I thought this really gave the song more of a sense of aloneness and disconnectedness. After that I started adding electronic accents, more of them as the song progressed, and added some reverb and worked on some panning of certain parts until I got something that fit for this piece of the puzzle.
